How to be compassionate. By a 5 year old.

I was putting J (the 5 year old) to bed tonight, as I do every night. As we settled in to pray and sing, he started asking me questions (as he often does).

The topic ranged all over the place as it is wont to do with a 5 year old.

"But daddy, why didn't you name me Timothy?"

Because there were other names I like better ~ though I do have an uncle Tim that I'm fond of.

"Uncle Tim...wasn't that the one that used to talk about barking spiders in the shop"

Actually that was your great grandpa Don.

"Where does he live now?"

He isn't with us any more. He passed away right after mommy and daddy were married.

"Would I have liked him?

I take a breath. Yes son, you would have loved him. And he would have loved you so very much.

The 5 year old pauses at this point. Then he says quietly:

"You miss him, don't you daddy?"

I pause. Then, also quietly.
Yes son. I miss him. I miss him...a lot.

Again, a pause.

"Daddy? I miss him too. I never knew him, but I miss him."

And I am undone.
Thank you son. Thank you so very...very much.

And as I type this, I begin to cry.
I love you, grandpa.

Late night, errr early morning

Maggie and hiccups.....

It is another odd hour of the night that we are sitting up with Maggie hiccups, she likes to get them regularly and especially after nursing, burping has a fresh diaper. SHOULD be sleeping and be back in bed instead we are trying to get rid of the monster that wracks a tiny body with convulsing, not anything dangerous but terribly bothersome hiccups.

So to keep myself occupied while we rock and sing, I thought I would tell the machine to upload some cute picts of Maggie's adorable cloth diapers. I had planned to do this 2 weeks ago but my, time has flown!

Ooops! You get to see a plain white diaper cover and one cute fleece cover. Sorry I am too tired to get it right. But now we are ready to sleep again, g'night!

Waiting...waiting...

This is the exciting part. The waiting. Getting more water. Waiting. Mmm...hey, they've got graham crackers ~ cool! More waiting.

More walking. I keep chattering. Janey finally gives me a kind look and says "You know, I think I'll walk by myself for a while.."

Ah. Right.

Check on G and Sondra ~ they're happily wrapped up watching their movie.

Doing my best to stay awake. Every kid (and the dog) was up last night.

Janey's still doing fine. (well, as fine as can be as one's body prepares to push out a 6-8 lb bowling ball...)

Doula is here...things going well.

Our doula arrived a bit ago. Jennifer is a massage therapist as well as labor support ~ which means I don't have to be quite so on top of things.

We're now placing bets on when she's going to be born...May 3rd or 4th.

I'm guessing (going out on a limb here) after midnight. But we'll see.

We're staying..for now.

Daughter #1 is watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the waiting room. Sondra is with her.

We're doing laps. (they must design the pregnancy wing with loops for a reason..)

At the hospital...

So here we are at the hospital. Janey'd been having contractions every 5 minutes, for about an hour for a half, 45 sec to a minute.
(TMI, I know, I know...)

G is firmly ensconced with "her" doula ~ Sondra (our babysitter). She'll bring G. in when the pushing starts.

Of course...all this is assuming we stay. =^)
